Hot-water planning for Greater Brisbane

Understand household hot-water use, running costs and possible savings

Independent planning estimates for households in Brisbane, Moreton Bay, Logan, Ipswich and Redlands.

Start with household demand, or open a specific calculator when the required information is already available.

Recommended starting point

Estimate household hot water use

Build a whole-household daily demand estimate from showers, baths, taps and connected appliance use. The submitted litres can continue into running-cost and payback calculations.

Estimate household hot water use
  • Whole-household demand is shown before energy costs are estimated.
  • Appliance uncertainty remains visible when a connection is marked “Not sure”.
  • No account or saved household profile is required.

Rebates and STCs are outside calculator arithmetic. Use the final payable installation quote once, without deducting an included discount again. Check incentives and quote treatment.

Electric vs Gas

Optional

Compare the variable running costs of two system types using the same household demand.

Understanding the estimate

What the calculators can help explain

Results connect household demand, system efficiency and selected energy rates while keeping important assumptions and exclusions visible.

What the estimates can show

See how whole-household hot-water demand and system inputs affect modelled running costs, annual differences and indicative payback.

What can affect costs

Household use, tariffs, system type, site conditions and current assistance can all matter. Results are planning estimates, not quotes or recommendations.

Systems

Understand the main hot-water system choices

System type, efficiency, tariff and site conditions can change a result. Use the calculators for household-specific planning figures.

Identify and compare hot-water systems
Heat pump
Uses electricity to move heat rather than create it directly. Upfront quote, available outdoor space, noise location and effective electricity rate.
Gas-boosted solar hot water
Roof collectors meet part of the thermal demand and a gas booster supplies the balance. Roof orientation and shading, gas supply, booster efficiency and maintenance.
Gas storage or instantaneous
Uses metered gas, with storage losses applying to tank systems. Gas usage rate, daily supply charges, existing connection and household demand.
Electric storage
Direct resistance heating with tank standby losses. General versus controlled-load tariff, tank size and circuit/timer compatibility. Rooftop PV is not numerically modelled.

Rebates and certificates

Check the incentive and the final quote

Eligible heat-pump and solar hot-water systems may qualify for federal Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs). A supplier quote may already include a certificate discount.

Rebates and STCs are outside calculator arithmetic. Enter the final payable installation amount once. Do not deduct a discount already reflected in the quote.

Evidence and independence

Calculations use documented inputs, models and source records. Results remain estimates and should be checked against current tariffs, site conditions and professional quotes before a purchase decision.
